John Barkley BIOGRAPHY
"My paintings are about humanity's tendency to impose structure on nature. Nature balks at being tamed, and does its best to bring itself back to the state in which it was meant to be, no matter what we do to it. They are also about our desire to frame the cosmos, by explaining it - but it insists on remaining mysterious.”A long tradition of Canadian art informs the work of John Barkley. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1964, John Barkley began painting and drawing as a boy. He was encouraged by his artist-father with whom he went on painting trips in the Ottawa valley. Barkley received his Bachelor of Fine Art, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Ottawa, Ontario in 1996 and has been painting professionally ever since. Barkley experiments with thick paint applied primarily with a palette knife and varied brushstrokes to create abstract and landscape works that simultaneously evoke a quiet contemplation of nature as well as an expression of the contemporary human psyche. John Barkley has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group shows and his paintings can be found in many private and corporate collections across Canada, the United States and Europe including Air Canada, Ottawa International Airport dept. of External affairs, Washington Bank, Bombardier Canada, Trump Tower and Maple Ridge Capital.
